3.6 Volts RF MOSFET Line-up Optimized for Single Cell Lithium-ion Battery Applications

Mitsubishi Electric introduces a new series of four 3.6V MOSFETs designed to enhance the cost-efficiency of battery-powered devices with output power ranging from 0.5 to 6.5 Watts.

These MOSFETs are ideal for various applications, including:

  • Commercial Radios
  • Rescue Beacons
  • Remote Meters

Key features

Mitsubishi Electric’s family of 3.6V high-power RF metal-oxide semiconductor field-effect transistors (MOSFETs) is engineered for single cell lithium-ion battery applications. While smartphones have long adopted 3.6V technology, the commercial radio industry has relied on conventional 7.2V batteries to meet higher output power demands. The new RD06LUS2 achieves industry-leading 6.5W output power and top-class efficiency (>60%). Lower power variants are perfect as drivers or efficient amplifiers for beacons and remote meters, benefiting from single cell battery technology. The small SMD packages enable compact board designs.

Advantages of 3.6V MOSFETs

The key benefit of this technology lies in its ability to be powered by a single cell 3.6V lithium-ion battery, providing enhanced performance with controlled thermal management. Choosing between a 3.6V MOSFET and a 7.2V MOSFET can greatly affect the efficiency, thermal management, and overall performance of electronic circuits. The primary advantages of 3.6V MOSFETs over 7.2V counterparts include:

  • Compatibility with Low Voltage Systems: Many modern electronic devices, particularly those powered by lithium-ion batteries (typically outputting around 3.6V), benefit from MOSFETs that operate efficiently at these lower voltages. This compatibility enhances overall system efficiency and battery life.
  • Cost-Effectiveness: Components designed for lower voltage applications can be less expensive than higher voltage counterparts, which may require more robust construction.
  • Reduced Size and Weight: The efficiency and lower heat generation of 3.6V MOSFETs enable the design of smaller and lighter circuits, which is especially beneficial in portable electronics and compact systems.

In summary, while both 3.6V and 7.2V MOSFETs have specific applications, the advantages of using 3.6V MOSFETs include lower power losses, faster switching capabilities, better thermal management, compatibility with low-voltage systems, cost-effectiveness, and potential size reductions in electronic designs.
